The year is 2020 and more than 1 billion people are studying English everyday.
I’ve got good news! That English textbook you have… yeah, that one. Throw it away!
For a long time school has been the same. Nothing really changed. The teacher gave you information and you would write it down one thousand times. Or your teacher would tell you to repeat “I’m fine, thank you” but when you’re asked “How are you”, you don’t understand.
Today we understand that these methods are BAD!
The way we are learning is changing everyday. People have more access to information than ever before. Even better, a lot of it is free! When I travel, I meet a lot of people from around the world. Most of the time I meet people speaking English.
These are five ways that watching Youtube can be more helpful than textbooks!
1. Listening
You hear real speech. You hear different accents. You hear the natural use of words. The point is, if you want to say something correctly you need to hear it.
2. Context
When you watch videos you see very helpful information as you listen to someone speak. This makes it very easy for you to remember these things. It’s just like when a baby learns to speak for the first time! They must associate things with the spoken words.
3. Interest
The most difficult part of getting people to learn is making them interested. With this method you can pick what you like so you will stick with it. Learning by watching is also better for a wide range of learning styles.
4. Use
We talk most about the things we like. Learning about the weather is great but we need to learn things that we can start using immediately!! This will make the process much more enjoyable.
5. Efficiency
Everyone watches videos. Youtube has 5,000,000,000 videos watched every day. Why not watch AND learn!
Think about how much time we lose TRYING to learn. Don’t be afraid to try something new. It’s important to find your learning style. Try it out. Pay attention to what works for you!
